Factors to Look Out for When Buying a Shed Kit

Material

Best Shed Kits – Reviews & Guide

The first and foremost factor you need to look out for is the material used in making the shed. This factor plays a key role in durability and quality. Precisely, the humidity, temperature, rainfall, and wind will play an important role in giving you the choice you want which is best for you.

Metal – This is known as the most durable material which can be used to make shed kits, although it is often produced into very thin sheets. Metals often provide structural support and it also never decays.  One disadvantage of metal is that during humid or wet climates, corrosion and rust can occur when it is not taken care of.

Wood – This is the second known most durable material which can be used in making garden sheds. In some cases, it can also turn out to be the most durable too. This is because wood is often placed in thicker chunks unlike metals with less give.  One advantage that wood has is that it is more susceptible to bloating and warping as a result of extreme humidity or rapid temperature shifts.

Resins – when it comes to tackling wetness and humidity, no material does it better than the resin which is available for shed kits. Just as every material has its advantages and disadvantages, resins can also suffer from extremely high temperatures; they can crack in the coldest of cold and melt in the highest of heats. It is also not as strong as the other two materials above, structurally.

Fabrics – This is the weakest material that is used for making shed kits although it is meant to provide shelter for rain more than anything else. Because of this,  this material is best when it comes to waterproofing and the absence of seams often preventing water from getting into it . Its downside is that during windy conditions, it can easily come loose or rear during the process.

Size

The size of a garden shed will determine the number of tools and general outdoor equipment you will be able to store safely in it. This is a very important factor but also be aware of the size of your garden or patio before you can welcome a new shed. Some of the large sheds reviewed above in this article are meant for larger storage options but you will need a lot of space in your garden to harbor it.

I advise that before you conclude or decide on the shed you want to buy, you should go out and measure your patio or garden with tape to get a good idea of the size of the shed you are looking for.

Another suggestion is that if you have a huge space in your yard and you can top up your money, go for a larger shed than you need. You will find out that with a time of building a healthy tool collection and outdoor equipment, getting a bigger shed will prevent unnecessary upgrades to contain new tools and equipment.

Opening

Best Shed Kits – Reviews & Guide

This factor covers both the ventilation and the windows. Ventilation generally alludes to vented gables that allow dangerous fumes and heat to leave the shed. The windows, on the other hand, can sometimes be opened to serve as a source of natural light so you can avoid electric light and provide more airflow thoroughly the shed.

Use

The use of the shed is another factor you need to consider when getting a new product kit. If your reason or use of the shed is to store few outdoor tools and maybe a bicycle, you could actually get a smaller portable model which is made out of resins and which could be easily set up with minimal requirements. Meanwhile, if you plan on having a shed that would be constantly be filled with lots of long-handle tools, shelves of gardening equipment, and some power tools, a larger garden shed will be required so you can get enough room to keep your things. If you plan on establishing a working set of vice and bench, you can get a larger shed, and also do not forget to opt-in for a more reinforced floor.

Price

When it comes to purchasing a credible shed kit, you should also look into one of the factors that determine whether you seal the deal or not, price. If you are on a budget, consider going for a much cheaper and smaller shed to store your tools. However, if you don’t mind the price, try getting a shed kit that is larger and can contain a lot of items for storage.

My Experience

The 6×10 Foot Tremont Storage shed is a fantastic offering from Suncast and this shed kit tops my list. This model is bigger than the 6×3 and the 6×8 model which would come later on the list.  Just as expected, the Tremont offers all the security and durability that other smaller models of Suncast products cannot offer a nice boost in extra space. This shed kit has reinforced flooring and wide double doors with external security hasps as well as robust double-wall resin panels which are constructed for optimum stability and strength.

The Tremont storage building is very easy to assemble and it is also compatible with other Suncast accessories meaning a hassle-free setup that can be expanded if needs be by buying additional Suncast equipment.

The Tremont Storage shed is a great mid-size shed at a mid-price point that once you purchase it, it will definitely not disappoint.

Lifetime 6446 Shed Kit review

2. Lifetime 6446

  • Material: Plastic
  • Size, ft: 8′ x 15′
  • Dimensions, Inches: 96 x 32 x 47.78

My Experience

Popularly known as a maker of basketball rims, lifetime has actually manufactured a number of products that are used for outdoor or garden use.  The Lifetime 6446 is made out of plastic, not cheap or thin-like plastic but industrial-grade plastic. The plastic also has been treated to fight UV damage keeping the shed’s color for a longer period of time.  If you live in hotter regions, you have to be aware that some parts of this shed are made out of metal and it has been said to heat up and loosen from its place.

Although, if you still need a shed that can resist various elements, this lifetime shed is guaranteed to give its users a durable structure better than most sheds. This is because while the panels are made from thick, dual-sided plastic, the frame of the shed is made completely out of heavy-duty steel.

The roof trusses are also made out of heavy-duty steel to help prevent strong wind and rain from wrecking the shed. One of the best designs about this storage kit is that it comes with a number of shelving units that most shed kits do not come with.

The lifetime 6446 comes with about 4 shelving units which are more than enough to store chemicals and oils.

Features

Features 2 screened vents, 2 shatterproof polycarbonate windows, 6 small skylights, 2 peg strips, 2 decorative shutters, 4 corner shelves, etc.

Features heavy-duty steel trusses that provide additional roof strength.

Features an attractive design that steel-reinforced doors for added security.

Low maintenance. Constructed with high-density polyethylene treated for UV protection with a steel wall.

Pros
  • It has various shelves enough to store chemical liquids.
  • It is easy to clean and cheap to maintain.
  • The panels are thick.
  • It has a reinforced steel frame.
  • It is one of the best waterproof sheds.
  • It has inbuilt lighting and ventilation.
Cons
  • It’s kinda expensive.
  • It is not ideal for hot climates.
  • It is very complex to assemble.

Keter Factor Shed Kit review

3. Keter Factor Shed

  • Material: Resin
  • Size, ft: 8′ x 11′
  • Dimensions, Inches: 101 x 130.5 x 95.5

My Experience

Using a more traditional approach, the Keter factor shed kit follows a standard suit set by the manufacturer using primarily polypropylene resin. While this negatively affects the customization options of this product, the polypropylene resin does have its positives too. For example, the polypropylene resin used to build this outdoor storage is far more resistant to decomposition compared to other materials available. It is also advised that users should not create their own holes to hang shelves and hooks just like how it is done for wood or plastic units.  With that said, maintenance and cleaning are very easy with the Keter factor, a simple spray with water on the shed is sufficient for cleaning.

Although the Keter factor is not suitable for custom shelving, it does also come with its own shelves which you do not purchase separately. The shelves are not really large and they are just corner shelves but they should be spacious enough to contain your chemicals and liquids. The frame, on the other hand, steel but the roof is a bit thin and not durable compared to other products I reviewed.  The floor, on the other hand, is one of the most durable I have seen that comes with a shed.  Just like most garden sheds on this list, the Keter Factor has windows that will allow natural lighting and ventilation which is built into the gables.

Features

Lockable for extra security. Features a lockable door to safely store away your tools.

Shelving options. Includes two shelves with brackets.

Features a ventilated 3-D tile roof that provides ventilation and fresh air inside the shed.

Features skylights for natural light. Windows and skylight included promoting natural lighting.

Pros
  • Has quality and durable floor.
  • Has reinforced steel frame to increase strength.
  • Made from organic resin.
  • It has inbuilt lighting and ventilation.
  • One of the largest backyards sheds in the market.
Cons
  • It is not that weatherproof.
  • It is a bit complex to assemble.
  • The roof and panels are thin.

The Suncast Glidetop Storage Shed is one of the smallest storage options that is being manufactured and marketed by Suncast.  Don’t be deceived by the size of this garden shed as the Suncast Glidetop still gives you plenty of storage options to store all your gardening tools, a mower, and if possible your bicycle too. How is this done, well the Suncast Glidetop has a lifting lid with a set of wide double doors; this gives you maximum storage capacity.

My Experience

Garden tools, lawnmower, and fertilizer bags have one thing in common, they are taking up space in your basement, and dragging them out every time you want to use them can be a problem that you want to best avoid. Keter provided a solution by manufacturing a compact garden shed that can help you keep these things comfortably outside your home.  This large-sized shed which is made by Keter can hold large equipment without appearing so large and taking up the whole yard.

The Keter Manor is made out of tough, weather-resistant plastic but it also has wooden components as well making it look simple and nice to look at.  This shed is prone not to peel, rust, or rot easily like metal and wooden materials.  The plastic resin is made to be fully recyclable. This storage unit comes with a built-in window that provides skylight and ventilation and also a lockable door with a standard padlock.

My Experience

When one talks about storage sheds, people are most likely to think and imagine a structure similar to this one. Even though the use of resin has become very popular in recent years due to its ease of use, durability, and cheap cost, it cannot be compared with most of the older style of a shed which was made with metal. Surprisingly,  this shed is the only one that is made exclusively out of metal in its manufacturing.  You don’t have to worry about this garden shed rusting or corroding because it has panels made out of electro-galvanized steel.

One of the properties this outdoor shed has over polypropylene resin is that it has the ability to withstand extreme hot or cold temperatures without cracking or warping. In terms of security and protection, the Arrow Hamlet Shed offers one of the best protections any storage shed can over.

Once the installation is complete, it provides one of the tightest closures which prevents bugs and other pests from entering inside. It is also waterproof due to its slanted roof, and sealed seams.
The only downside associated with the Arrow Hamlet Shed is the assembling.  Most of the predrilled holes and screws do not fit and assembling can be complex as ever.

Features

Features a reliable shed that is made out of durable electro-galvanized steel and treated baked-on enamel to resist rust and corrosion.

Perfect for storing outdoor tools, gardening tools, bikes, machinery, etc. with a single sliding door.

Efficient and beautiful design to go with your environment.

Features a secure storage space with lockable doors to keep your items safe.

Pros
  • It is made of electro-galvanized steel
  • It is not prone to rust or corrodes.
  • It has flush seams to prevent pests.
  • It provides solid waterproofing.
  • It is very spacious for storing items.
Cons
  • It doesn’t come with a floor.
  • The panels bend easily.
  • It is very difficult to assemble.
  • The pre-drilled holes don’t line up.

My Experience

While ShelterLogic is not a famous company that can be found in every home, they are actually good at manufacturing storage sheds. As a matter of fact, ShelterLogic owns another major division called Arrow Sheds which allows them to diversify and produce unique products with unique features. Originally, the ShelterLogic brand specializes in the production and distribution of fabric-based storage products. While this includes shed kits, it also extends to greenhouses and garages too.  This shed kit features a polypropylene resin cover which might be a bit sketchy but it has been treated with so many protections making it resistant to a lot of weather complications.

Firstly, the cover is completely waterproof, without seams, unlike other garden sheds I reviewed. In addition to that,  the cover material has been treated with antifungal and anti-aging chemicals which increase its lifespan significantly.  Finally, it is also been treated with UV protection chemicals which help retain the color and prevent color fainting. With all these treatments done on this fabric, it does not mean that that it is still suitable for windy regions.

Beyond the covers, ShelterLogic Shed-in-a-Box shed also uses strong and durable support. It has a very powerful powder-coated steel frame.  This steel is thick enough to withstand some elements and the powder coating prevents corrosion and rust.

Features

Waterproof coverage cover capable of withstanding rainy days.

The shelter lock feature makes sure rock-solid stability delivers a more durable shelter.

Durable steel coated frame to provide a stronghold.

Easy slide cross rail system to lock down and square up the frame for the continuous or initial frame to fabric fit.

Pros
  • It is a cheap shed kit.
  • It has steel frames.
  • It is very easy to set up.
  • Can be assembled on any surface.
  • It is easy to adjust.
  • Multi-treated Polypropylene cover.
Cons
  • It is not good in windy regions.
  • It is only okay for light raining regions.
  • It is not the most durable.

My Experience

While this company focuses more on outdoor products, they specifically specialize in the production of outdoor storage kits. Established in the United States for over 25 years now, this brand is primarily known for its use of resins, though that does still stop them to use wood. This storage shed features lots of advantageous qualities and the best part about it is that they offer a slightly lower price point than most of their market competitors to provide the best and most suitable value shed kit.

One of the best features of this backyard shed is that it is far more durable than some of the other storages I reviewed in this article.  The resin material is not poor or weak but it does stand to benefit from a bit of treatment and Suncast does just that. The roof and the frame are both reinforced with metal to provide better structural stability. The floors are also reinforced to be strong enough to hold machines like lawnmowers and bikes. The use of resins has its various benefits though it is the ease of assembly that attracts customers the most.

Installation of this outdoor shed is a bit easier than some of the products on my list, thanks to the double-wall panels.  The only disadvantage this shed kit has is that the most important parts of the unit are made out of plastic.  This affects mostly the door hinges which have been known to be weak.

Features

Features outdoor storage shed that can be used to store garden tools, long handle tools, ladder, and bikes.

Multi-panel walls are engineered for durability and strength.

Sturdy reinforced floors that can support heavy items such as tractors.

Lockable safe doors. Padlock holes in which padlock can be used to protect valuables.

Pros
  • Panels are thick to increase durability.
  • Requires very little or no maintenance.
  • It comes with reinforced floors that can handle tractor weight.
  • It is reasonably weatherproof.
  • It is made from treated durable resins.
Cons
  • It does not come with shelving.
  • The most relevant parts are made up of plastic.
  • It is somewhat expensive.

My Experience

The Keter Oakland Storage Shed is a product of Meyer plastic which is a fraction of the global enterprise Keter Group. The company has been in existence for over 60 years now and they have a lot of factories all over the world. The company is famous when it comes to the manufacturing of resin-based products such as the Oakland Storage shed. Keter storage sheds like this Oakland model are made from Duotech.  This is a resin-based product but much different than plastic. Not only does the Duotech system combat these elements well but it has a beautiful wood-like finish.

Keter Oakland Storage Shed also gives you the option of either painting it or keeping it plain like that. Either way, the resin-like material it is made of can hold up for years hence this unit comes with a limited lifetime warranty. The Oakland 7511 is generally an ultra-rugged, weather-resistant shed that provides its users with a spacious secured space with a heavy-duty ceiling, heavy-duty floor, and a steel-reinforced skeleton that supports the wall.

Features

Features easy to assemble parts. Duotech sheds are designed to be put together and assembled at a go.

Oakland sheds are designed to have a natural and relaxing finish that would beautify the environment.

Features a stainless steel locking system that provides extra security.

Pros
  • It has a very nice and beautiful design.
  • The ceilings are tall enough to contain adults.
  • The skylight and windows are nicely positioned to improve lighting and ventilation.
  • It is made out of durable resin-like material called Duotech.
  • It has a sturdy and solid structure.
Cons
  • It requires two people for easy assembly.
  • The lock is a bit faulty.

FAQ

What are the best outdoor storage sheds?
This question seems a bit difficult to answer considering the storage options and also the different types of sheds available. With that said, the best sheds normally come with nice security features, reinforced floors, and maybe a high-end waterproof system to keep water off. Also, look for products that have a warranty above 10 years because manufacturers have confidence in the quality and longevity of their products.
How long do wood sheds last?
One of the most frequently asked questions when it comes to wood sheds is how long they last. To answer that, it depends on how one caters to them, manages them, and also the weather condition of the area the shed is established. First, a wooden structure needs coatings and preservatives once every year in humid climates and once every two or three years in dry environments. This makes the wood strong and also preserves it from decay. About the other factors, weather, the harsher the environment, the more abuse the wood is going to take. If you live in a windy or wet area, try as much as possible to establish your shed in a sheltered area – preservatives are the key to healthier and longer sheds.
Should I buy a shed or build one?
When you build a shed, you tend to have full control over its design. This is because you will be able to construct your shed to cater to your storage needs. Also, it would be cheaper to construct or build a shed since you only pay for the tools as well as the materials. However, when it comes to building a shed, you have to dedicate a lot of time and effort to see the entire project through. On the other hand, if building a shed will feel cumbersome, buying, or purchasing a shed is the best option. You may have to spend more than building it yourself but buying a shed kit will save you lots of time and energy.
Do sheds need permits?
Permit Requirements for most garden sheds may vary with different locations. In some areas, you really don’t need a permit for smaller sheds such as 6×8 or 8×10. However, the larger garden sheds may contradict local zoning restrictions. Many areas allow sheds to be installed mostly in your backyard. It is important to know that if you violate your local building code, you will be fined as well as facing a penalty for building violations.
What comes in a shed kit?
Regardless of the material used in making the shed, there are three important structural parts that comes with a shed. These include the floors and foundations, the internal fittings, and the superstructure.
Do you need a base for a plastic shed?
Yes, you do. It is advisable to go with concrete pavers. They are great at providing a solid flat surface upon which sheds are built or set on. The bigger the concrete paver, the heavier the shed is, but also the fewer you need. Pavers are great on that ground for sheds made out of plastic.
How far away from the house does a shed have to be?
As a homeowner, you can’t build or establish a shed within 10 feet of the rear property line and 15 feet from the side property line. There has to be enough space/room between your neighbor’s yard and your shed. If you have more questions, you can refer to your permit, talk to the HOA head, or contact the municipality office.
How long to build a shed kit?
Once a building permit has been approved, building a shed takes at least 4 weeks or longer to get it together. The concrete floors will also need to cure from 4 to 7 days upon construction.
How to assemble a shed kit?
  • Sheds are sold and supplied as a set of individual parts ready to be assembled or put together. This makes construction easy and quick with two people operations effective in the space of a few hours without difficulty. Before you begin, it is important for you to get the right measurements and location for the base, find a helper, as well as familiarizing yourself with the manual. The first step you need to take is positioning the floor of the shed squarely onto the base.
  • Secondly, hold steady the panel that will hold the door on the ground with its face facing up. Attach the hinges of the door with the screw provided making sure the barrels of each hinge is found on the outside face of the door. Next, make pilot holes in which you will insert screws later to avoid splitting. Next fix the panels and the doors together by screwing each panel together, at this stage, the shed should be able to stand unaided. After that, fix the walls of the shed onto the floor then prepare the roof panel for installation.
  • Attach the roof battens. Not every shed is the same, so when installing a shed, you will need to add additional support for the roof while following the manufacturer’s support. Next position the roof panels making sure the offset batten sits comfortably in the notches at the top of each gable end. When that is done, secure the roof panels from inside the shed using 30mm screws. Add the roof covering and cut the felt if it hasn’t been pre-cut already. Lay the felt on the roof and secure it to the eaves.
  • If you have finished fixing the roof, attach the bargeboards and corner cover strips. Fit the acrylic window panel if applicable. Next, position the window beading so that each section sits flush while keeping the acrylic tight as possible. Lastly, attach the door fastener and the security lock system for protection.

Conclusion

The best shed kit varies differently for everyone but there are few qualities that can help users make the right choice. Usually, you get what you buy and if you try to hassle or bargain, you will be disappointed.

The storage shed market has a lot of amazing products and kits that boast unique features while catering to its user’s demands. I hope that my top 10 list today on shed kit was able to help you choose a product you will be making use of.
